Moldova drone factory disinformation allegations

Overview

The Moldovan government has denied allegations regarding the establishment of military-purpose drone factories within the country. Following claims by Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban that preparations for a production plant were underway, government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici dismissed the reports as “manipulations thrown into the public space,” noting that such defense investments would require changes to the legal framework.

Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu added that any drone production would be for domestic needs, such as agriculture and emergency services, rather than for Ukraine.

Subsequent analysis by the Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation (StratCom) identified a coordinated disinformation campaign involving multiple Telegram accounts spreading these claims. StratCom noted the narrative emerged following several drone airspace violations in Moldova. The campaign reportedly included accounts associated with Sputnik Moldova and was followed by comments from Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who described Moldova as an ‘anti-Russian Western testing ground.’
