Moldova state sovereignty and international relations

Overview

Moldovan authorities have taken steps to distance the country from Russian influence and regional agreements. President Maia Sandu revoked the citizenship of three individuals, including two members of the separatist administration in Tiraspol. These individuals are accused of participating in the adoption of unconstitutional acts and promoting the “Russian world” ideology while supporting the illegal military presence of the Russian Federation in Moldova.

In a separate legislative move, the Moldovan Parliament approved the first reading of bills to denounce two cooperation agreements within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The first agreement involves the restitution of cultural and historical values, which officials stated has become redundant. The second is a 2017 protocol regarding the transfer of narcotics, weapons, and explosive materials used as evidence. Parliament noted that denouncing these protocols does not end international cooperation in criminal matters, as Moldova remains a party to other frameworks like the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters.
