Moldovan education union salary protests
Overview
The Trade Union Federation of Education and Science (FSEȘ) in Moldova has announced planned protest actions due to uncertainty regarding promised salary increases for teaching and research staff. The union claims the government has not guaranteed that salary hikes, scheduled for September 1, 2026, under Law no. 270, will be implemented.
Following unsuccessful consultations with the Ministry of Education and Research, the union rejected offers of temporary financial compensations between 3,000 and 4,000 lei, arguing these are not substitutes for permanent increases. FSEȘ has requested that Prime Minister Vasile Tofan provide a committed implementation calendar.
Protest actions are scheduled to begin with a picketing action in front of the Government on August 19. If the increases are not applied by September 1, the union intends to launch national protests throughout the month. Further escalations may include declaring a ‘State of Emergency in Education’ on October 1 and a large-scale national action on October 5 to mark World Teachers' Day.
