Moldovan health ministry oversight

In late July 2026, Moldova’s Ministry of Health ordered an inspection of the national Agency for Medicines after a media investigation alleged favoritism and irregularities in the evaluation and registration of medical devices. The ministry pledged a thorough review to ensure transparency and compliance.

A week later, in early August 2026, the ministry completed a formal evaluation of the Diomid Gherman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery. The audit uncovered long‑standing administrative, financial and organisational weaknesses, including a modest budget deficit, reliance on interim contracts, and shortcomings in procurement and asset management. Despite these issues, the institute continued to provide essential medical services.

Together, the two actions illustrate the ministry’s broader push to scrutinise and improve governance across Moldova’s health sector, targeting both regulatory bodies and major medical institutions.
