Moldovan railway transit disruptions and underutilization

Overview

Moldovan railway transit is experiencing significant underutilization and operational disruptions. The Cantemir–Fălciu railway crossing, a strategic link between Moldova and Romania inaugurated on April 22, has remained inactive for over four months, with reports of rusted rails and overgrown vegetation at the site.

Further disruptions have affected the Vălcineț–Bălți–Ungheni route, where transit traffic dropped to zero between September 5 and 8, 2026, despite previously averaging 15–20 wagons per day. While the Ministry of Infrastructure aims to make Moldova’s 1,150 kilometers of track functional for business, Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea noted that Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM) is responsible for identifying economic agents to utilize the routes. No specific transport contracts or dates for the first crossing of the Fălciu bridge have been established.
