Monte Arballu shipwreck in Lanzarote

Overview

The fishing vessel ‘Monte Arballu’ sank while docked at the Naos cruise pier in the Port of Arrecife, Lanzarote. The incident has triggered a marine pollution emergency following the detection of a fuel slick measuring approximately 30 by 15 meters.

The vessel contains a fuel tank with roughly 10,000 liters of diesel. While the total amount of fuel in the tank has not necessarily leaked, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The Las Palmas Port Authority activated the Maritime Interior Plan (PIM) in emergency phase, deploying two anti-pollution barriers to contain the slick. Additionally, the Maritime Captaincy activated the National Maritime Plan (PMN) in alert phase.

The Canary Islands Civil Protection Emergency Plan (PLATECA) has also been placed on pre-alert to facilitate coordination between administrative bodies and ensure resources remain available. Authorities are currently evaluating methods to refloat the vessel, taking into account the area's shallow waters.
