Montenegro-Albania border symbol dispute

Overview

Montenegrin authorities intercepted a convoy of 13 foreign-registered vehicles carrying approximately 20 people, primarily members of the Albanian diaspora, at the Vraćenovići–Deleuša border crossing. Police stated the vehicles displayed Albanian national symbols in violation of the Law on Public Order and Peace regarding the unauthorized display of another state’s symbols.

Following police warnings, the drivers removed the symbols to proceed toward Kosovo. The incident triggered political friction, with Lindon Đeljaj of the Albanian Forum asserting that the Albanian flag is a legally recognized symbol for Albanians in Montenegro. Meanwhile, Tamara Vujović of the Democrats emphasized that the law must be applied consistently.

Some members of the diaspora, who were traveling from the UK to participate in anti-government protests in Tirana, claimed they were blocked due to instructions from the Albanian government. In response, protesters in Tirana marched to the Montenegrin Embassy to demand unhindered passage for the group.
