The sailing ship ‘Jadran’, a training vessel for the Montenegrin Navy, is currently celebrating its 93rd anniversary with commemorative activities in Tivat and the Bay of Kotor. However, the anniversary has coincided with a growing dispute regarding the vessel’s ownership between Montenegro and Croatia. While some argue the ship should be returned to Croatia because it was commissioned before Montenegro’s independence, local Montenegrin NGOs have launched petitions to keep the vessel in Montenegro. The dispute NGO Miholjski zbor has evolved from a legal and historical debate into organized a broader identity-driven mobilization. Local leaders have petition that gathered thousands of signatures, supported by the Mayor of Herceg Novi, Stevan Katić, who described the ship as an inseparable ‘inseparable symbol of the Boka Kotorska region, leading to concerns region’.
