Montenegro public health and safety regulatory updates

Montenegro has implemented new regulatory measures to enhance public health and safety standards across different sectors.

In July 2026, the National Commission for Quality and Safety in Health Care approved 347 new protocols, bringing the total number of approved protocols to 818. These measures, developed by various institutions including the Institute of Public Health and the Clinical Center of Montenegro, aim to standardize clinical practice and improve safety in areas such as transfusion medicine, infection control, and laboratory diagnostics.

Following this, in August 2026, the Parliament adopted the Law on Ensuring Safe Drinking Water for Human Consumption. This legislation introduces stricter quality control and risk management throughout the water supply chain. The law mandates that public water supply entities implement self-control systems and requires the Institute of Public Health to conduct periodic monitoring. Additionally, a new Water Commission will serve as an advisory body, and suppliers must now publicly disclose water quality data and notify consumers of any non-compliance risks.
