Morandi bridge collapse trial in Italy

An Italian court has been conducting a three‑year criminal trial over the 14 August 2018 collapse of Genoa’s Morandi bridge, which killed 43 people. The proceedings have examined the conduct of 57 defendants, including former Autostrade per l’Italia chief executive Giovanni Castellucci and other senior managers, on charges ranging from road‑traffic homicide to disaster and falsification. Prosecutors have asked for cumulative prison terms of up to 400 years.

The trial’s sentencing phase was scheduled for 16 July 2026, with the first‑degree verdict to be read on that afternoon. In the days leading up to the decision, Autostrade per l’Italia’s chief executive Arrigo Giana issued a public apology to victims’ families, residents of Genoa and the nation, calling the apology a “moral necessity” and noting that the company is now under state control.

The outcome is expected to shape future infrastructure safety and regulatory oversight in Italy, while the court will later issue a detailed justification for its judgment.
