Morelia municipal administration and political dynamics

Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, the mayor of Morelia, Mexico, has addressed both internal political dynamics and municipal administration. Regarding party politics, Martínez Alcázar rejected claims that opposition parties PAN and PRI are causing friction within the ruling Morena party, asserting that such confrontations are a “longstanding characteristic” of the party’s dynamics.

In his second government report, the mayor detailed administrative progress, specifically highlighting a 2 billion peso investment in public works. Key projects include the Bicentenario Sports Complex, the expansion of 75 kilometers of rural roads, and a new Cultural and Convention Center, which are part of a long-term vision for the city’s 500th anniversary in 2041. The administration also noted the growth of tourism and the designation of Morelia as a ‘Creative City of Music’.

While acknowledging that public security remains a “major challenge,” Martínez Alcázar reported that Morelia has become one of the most monitored cities in Mexico, utilizing 7,800 cameras, body cams, and artificial intelligence. He noted a downward trend in homicides and vehicle thefts.

Expanding on these infrastructure efforts, Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla noted that the state is executing an investment exceeding 10.4 billion pesos to transform mobility in the capital. Major upcoming projects include the Morelia cable car (3 billion pesos) and the Morebús transport system (2.9 billion pesos). Social initiatives through DIF Morelia, such as centers for autism and senior citizens, were also highlighted. Politically, the report drew attention to 2027 electoral prospects. Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz, who attended the event, described her relationship with Martínez Alcázar as “institutionally respectful.”
