Moroccan media regulation and electoral integrity
Overview
In Morocco, the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA) has taken regulatory action against media broadcasts following concerns over electoral integrity and neutrality.
On September 15, 2026, the National Rally of Liberties (RNI) filed a formal complaint with HACA regarding a sports program host on a private radio station. The party alleged that the host’s remarks on September 14 included “implications of threat and violence” and used a non-political programming space to express biased views against a political actor.
Following this, on September 19, 2026, HACA suspended the program ‘Deen wa Dunya’ on Shada Radio for one month. The suspension was triggered by an episode in which a guest, identified as a ‘religious scholar’, used his status to influence voters by urging them to vote based on religious piety. HACA ruled that the guest’s remarks and the host’s supportive reactions violated requirements for objectivity, neutrality, and the duty of reserve during an election period.
