Moroccan political tensions involving Abdelilah Benkirane
Overview
Abdelilah Benkirane, leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), has engaged in a series of political confrontations involving accusations related to normalization with Israel.
During election campaign rallies in Taroudant and Agadir, Benkirane targeted Fatima Zahra Mansouri and the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), labeling the PAM a “Zionist party.” He warned Mansouri that failing to distance herself from pro-normalization rhetoric could lead him to view her as “Israel’s candidate for the Moroccan government.”
Internal PJD tensions also surfaced when Benkirane directed sharp remarks at his predecessor, former Prime Minister Saad Dine El Othmani. Following criticisms from Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi regarding the party's accountability for the 2020 normalization agreement, Benkirane told El Othmani to “stay at home” and focus on scientific activities to avoid providing political ammunition to opponents. Although Benkirane later issued a social media apology to El Othmani, the incident has intensified debates within the PJD concerning political responsibility and the legacy of normalization.
