Overview

Morocco’s state-owned OCP Group has expanded its international market presence and technical capabilities regarding phosphate-based fertilizers.

In the United States, the company resumed shipments after a five-year hiatus following the temporary suspension of countervailing duties by the U.S. administration. This move, intended to support domestic food security and agricultural production, saw an initial 54,000-ton cargo of triple superphosphate arrive at the port of New Orleans. To further integrate into the American supply chain, OCP North America and CHS Inc. announced a joint venture to construct a $450 million phosphate fertilizer plant in Waggaman, Louisiana. The facility, located near New Orleans, is expected to produce over one million metric tonnes of fertilizer annually by converting phosphoric acid supplied by OCP Group into finished products. This project, the first of its kind in the U.S. since 1984, has received support from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.

Simultaneously, OCP Group has implemented new technology to address heavy metal contamination. To comply with tightening European health regulations, specifically following legislative actions in France, the company has developed methods to reduce cadmium levels in its products. Since early 2025, OCP has offered fertilizers containing less than 20 milligrams of cadmium per kilogram to mitigate risks associated with the toxic metal migrating into the food chain.
