MotoGP has announced plans to relocate the Australian Grand Prix from Phillip Island to a new street circuit in Adelaide beginning in 2027. The move follows the final race at Phillip Island in 2026. Proponents, including four-time winner Jack Miller, argue that the remote location of Phillip Island creates accessibility obstacles for fans. Miller noted that ‘the hardest part is getting people to the circuits,’ suggesting an urban setting will boost spectator growth. While the transition aims to increase attendance and revenue by utilizing urban infrastructure, the plan has faced scrutiny. Former champion Casey Stoner raised concerns regarding whether a street circuit can offer the same safety margins as a permanent facility. In response, MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta stated that safety remains ‘non-negotiable’ during the design process. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has unveiled the design for the $96 million, 4.13-kilometre street circuit. Developed in collaboration with the FIM and MotoGP, the track features 15 corners and utilizes streets such as Rundle Road, Stag Corner, Brewery Bend, and Dequetteville Terrace. The layout, located within a city parkland, will include two chicanes and is expected to reach speeds of up to 343 km/h. To address safety concerns, the revised design incorporates temporary gravel run-off areas; riders Jack Miller and Alex Marquez noted these features make the layout resemble a road-race track rather than a traditional urban street circuit. The project is expected to generate over $200 million annually for South Australia and will host the Santos Tour Down Under from 2028. However, the development faces local opposition due to environmental concerns regarding the removal of trees. In response, officials have committed to replanting more trees than those removed. As of late September 2026, the project faces a legal challenge in the Federal Court.
