The rise of motorhome and caravan travel has brought both sustainability benefits and regulatory challenges to France and Luxembourg.

Initially, camping-car travel was highlighted as a sustainable tourism option that supports local economies and reduces environmental footprints through resource conservation. In France, specific registration rules were noted for caravan owners, requiring digital documentation via France Titres depending on vehicle weight.

However, increasing visitor numbers have led to heightened tensions regarding land use. In Brittany, French municipalities have implemented stricter nighttime parking rules to manage traffic and protect natural spaces from wild camping. These measures have faced legal challenges from the Comité de Liaison du Camping-car, which argues that such restrictions may infringe upon the “principle of freedom of movement”.

Similar environmental issues have emerged in Luxembourg, where illegal wild camping at a Park and Ride site in Kockelscheuer has reportedly caused significant pollution, including waste and human excrement, in nearby forested areas.
