Mount Etna volcanic activity and research
Overview
Mount Etna has experienced recent volcanic activity, including an eruption characterized by an ash plume and lava flow from the Voragine crater.
In parallel, scientific research conducted by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has focused on reconstructing a significant magma intrusion from May 2008. Researchers determined that a lateral dike propagated northward from the central conduit, creating a “dry fracture field” and a sequence of earthquakes. Although the intrusion halted before reaching the northern flank, it eventually turned southward and triggered an eruption in the Valle del Bove.
Scientists emphasize that studying these non-eruptive magmatic movements and how magma deviates from predictable paths is vital for improving volcanic risk prevention and developing more reliable predictive models.
