Mount Papandayan volcanic activity and blue fire phenomenon
Overview
In late September 2026, a rare “blue fire” phenomenon appeared at Kawah Manuk on Mount Papandayan in West Java. This event, caused by the combustion of sulfur-rich gases, prompted authorities to restrict access to certain areas and implement a 500-meter safety radius due to the risk of toxic gases like sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.
By mid-October 2026, the blue fire phenomenon had subsided. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) determined the volcano’s activity returned to Level I (normal), leading the West Java Major Nature Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) to reopen hiking trails in the Garut Regency. While tourism has resumed, officials continue to monitor the crater and maintain restrictions on camping at Pondok Saladah to prevent forest fires.
