Mozambique border infrastructure modernization
Overview
Mozambique is implementing several infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing its border posts to enhance regional trade.
In Manica Province, the government approved a US$37 million public-private partnership to upgrade the Machipanda border post. A Chinese consortium, including UnionPortlink Capital and Zhongmei Engineering Group, will finance and operate the facility under a 25-year concession. The project includes building three bridges, a 35,000-square-metre multimodal cargo terminal, and warehouses to facilitate the movement of over 2,000 daily trucks along the Beira Corridor connecting to neighbors such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi.
Furthering these modernization efforts, Mozambique has also launched a 980 million meticais (approximately US$14.9 million) project to rehabilitate the Ressano Garcia One-Stop Border Post to improve logistics between Mozambique and South Africa. These border initiatives are part of a broader development strategy that includes a planned US$2 billion investment in the agricultural sector to support productivity through improved irrigation and mechanization.
