Mozambique economic and regional development initiatives

Overview

Mozambique has initiated several large-scale economic and regional development programs. In August 2026, President Daniel Chapo launched the MozCommunity project, a $250 million World Bank-funded initiative designed to develop 56 districts across the Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula provinces through 2034. This program focuses on climate-resilient infrastructure, economic opportunities for women and youth, and stabilizing the northern region through improved access to schools, health centers, and water systems.

Concurrently, the government established the Mozambique Development Bank (BDM) to support national industrialization and local content policies. With a social capital of 32 billion meticais fully subscribed by the State, the BDM is tasked with providing credit to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for strategic projects in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and infrastructure, addressing a historical gap in commercial bank lending.
