Mozambique education infrastructure and access initiatives

Overview

Mozambique is addressing significant educational gaps through large-scale government and private sector investments. A study by the Movimento de Educação Para Todos (MEPT) and the Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Económicos (IESE) revealed that approximately five million children are currently outside the national education system, often due to factors such as informal trade, gold mining, or early pregnancy.

To combat this, the government announced a €305.8 million plan to expand pre-school education coverage from 3% to 10% by 2035. This strategy involves shifting responsibility for early childhood education to the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action.

Further efforts to strengthen the education sector include a $12 million investment to modernize nine public technical and vocational institutes across eight provinces. This program focuses on infrastructure rehabilitation and capacity building for trainers. Additionally, the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has allocated 67 million meticais to construct a new secondary school in the Moamba district to improve local access to learning environments.
