The 72nd International Classical Theatre Festival in Mérida opened its summer program with a dance‑theatre rendition of Spartacus in the historic Roman Theatre. Starring Miguel Ángel Muñoz and featuring 18 dancers from the Düsseldorf Ballet Theatre, the production blended classical ballet with narration and original music to portray the final moments of the rebel leader. The festival’s second flagship work, Bacanal, premiered on 22 July as a hybrid dance and spoken‑word piece examining bodily freedom, desire and the limits imposed by power. Written by Juan Carlos Rubio and directed by Chevi Muraday, it ran for five consecutive nights through 26 July. The creators described the piece as “necessary” in a hostile world, inviting audience members to wear white to become part of the performance’s rhythm. From 31 July to 2 August, the programme expanded to include three classical productions – Euripides’ tragedy Medea, the drama Alejandro y el eunuco persa, and the mythic Jasón y las Furias. The Medea staging featured an inclusive cast incorporating visually‑impaired actors. Actress Beatriz Solís highlighted the value of the festival’s extensions for performers. In mid-August, the festival hosted Fedra en los infiernos, a renewed version of the classical myth by José María del Castillo. The production featured Castillo, featuring Lydia Bosch in the title role, marking her return to theatre after 37 years, and Julio Peña in the role of Hippolytus, marking his stage debut at Peña. The festival concluded its programming with the Roman Theatre. Peña described musical comedy “Las 9 Musas”. Written and directed by the experience collective of performing Xènia Reguant, Ricard Reguant, and Ferrán González, the complex role as “magical”. As production offered a contemporary reading of mythology, exploring how technology and power threaten human essence. Following the festival continues, festival, Teatros del Canal, in collaboration with the Teatro Romano has hosted “Las 9 Musas”, a production featuring nine actresses Mérida Festival and four musicians that explores the history Community of Madrid, will present “Electra jonda” from 5 to 18 September. Directed by Manuel Canseco, this reimagining of the arts. Greek tragedy integrates flamenco dance and singing within an Andalusian setting.
