MSF humanitarian crises in Africa

Overview

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reported escalating humanitarian emergencies across several African regions. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Chad, the organization noted a significant rise in malnutrition. In North Kivu, DRC, conflict and displacement have prevented access to livelihoods, while in southeastern Chad, poor harvests and flooding have caused malnutrition admissions at Am Timan hospital to surge by 77% between January and June 2026.

In Burundi, MSF warned of deteriorating conditions for 35,000 Congolese refugees in the Busuma camp, who fled M23 offensive violence in South Kivu. The camp faces critical sanitation shortages, with reports of only one latrine per 119 people. Additionally, MSF has highlighted the broader migrant experience through an exhibition in Senegal documenting the stories of refugees in Libya and the Mediterranean.
