MSME digital transformation in Southeast Asia

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines and Indonesia, are navigating a transition toward a cash-lite economy through digital tools.

Initial reports indicate a significant gap between interest and adoption; while 77% of MSMEs in the Philippines express interest in digital tools, only 20% have fully adopted them due to costs and technical skill gaps. Research in Indonesia further identifies barriers such as limited digital literacy and competition from larger tech-enabled firms, suggesting that success requires infrastructure upgrades and digital skills training.

In the Philippines, the push for digitalization is gaining momentum through specialized services and industry advocacy. G-Xchange Inc. President and CEO Ren-ren Reyes has emphasized that digital solutions must move “beyond simple payments to improve overall business management and operational efficiency.” Tools like GCash for Business are facilitating this by offering tap-to-pay and card transaction capabilities to help merchants automate operations. The impact of such integration was highlighted by the inaugural DITO BizBayani Awards, which recognized businesses like Prutasan ni Adan and Ask Lex PH Academy for their innovation and digital impact.

However, connectivity remains a critical hurdle. Converge ICT Solutions Inc. has urged MSMEs to view internet connectivity as a “critical business investment rather than a household utility,” noting that enterprise-grade connections are essential for cloud-based tools and digital transactions. This is particularly vital given that MSMEs constitute approximately 99 percent of all Philippine businesses and contribute roughly 36 percent to the national Gross Domestic Product.
