MTA subway signal modernization project
Overview
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has initiated a $1.9 billion project to modernize aging signal equipment on the A and C subway lines in Brooklyn and Queens. The initiative aims to replace century-old technology with communications-based train control (CBTC) across approximately 42 track miles and 23 stations, spanning from High Street to Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard.
Funding for the project is sourced from New York City’s congestion-pricing program. To facilitate the transition to CBTC, the MTA announced a nine-day service disruption scheduled from November 7 through November 16. During this period, train service will be suspended between Rockaway Blvd and Ozone Park–Lefferts Blvd, with free shuttle buses provided to replace the service. The modernization project is expected to reach completion by the second quarter of 2032.
