Multiple sclerosis awareness and treatment in Italy
Overview
The Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (AISM) is focusing on both clinical advancements and the social challenges faced by patients in Italy, where over 140,000 people are affected by the condition.
On the clinical front, recent developments include the Phase III OCARINA II study, which demonstrated that a subcutaneous formulation of ocrelizumab is non-inferior to the intravenous version in terms of efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics, while offering reduced administration time.
Simultaneously, AISM is raising awareness about the impact of multiple sclerosis on education. Data from the 2026 MS Barometer shows that the disease frequently affects young people, with nearly one in five diagnoses occurring in individuals under the age of 25. The association reports that 70% of students and 86% of university students with the condition face academic difficulties. AISM president Gianluca Pedicini noted that symptoms such as fatigue and frequent absences are often misidentified as a “lack of motivation” rather than being recognized as manifestations of the disease.
