On 28 July 2026 the Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar voted to raise Algeciras’s water‑treatment fee by 15 % and shift billing to a bimonthly schedule, prompting sharp criticism from the PSOE and other opposition parties who called the move a hidden price hike.

Two days later, on 30 July 2026, municipal councils in Spain’s Alfàs del Pi and Ecuador’s Pastaza adopted new water‑tariff ordinances that left existing rates unchanged. Alfàs del Pi’s measure simply aligned local rules with national law while adding consumer protections for vulnerable households. Pastaza introduced a revised tariff schedule with a modest residential charge and a continued subsidy to offset higher production costs, aiming for financial sustainability without raising prices.

The two snapshots illustrate diverging municipal approaches to water pricing: Algeciras pursued a direct rate increase amid political push‑back, whereas Alfàs del Pi and Pastaza chose regulatory updates and subsidies to maintain current billing levels.
