Murder of David D’Souza in Udupi

Overview

On August 7, 2026, Congress leader and former panchayat president David D’Souza was shot dead in broad daylight near St Francis Xavier Church in Padubidri, Udupi district, Karnataka. Two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire as D’Souza was entering his vehicle.

Initial police investigations led to the arrest of three suspects, including a prime accused identified as Raju, who was injured during a police encounter.

By August 24, authorities identified Anuj Patil, a Mumbai-based gangster, as the individual allegedly orchestrating the murder. Patil, who had been absconding since 2017 and faces multiple criminal charges including those under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was shot in the leg by police in Udupi. The shooting occurred after Patil allegedly attacked officers and snatched a service weapon during his custody. Patil was subsequently admitted to Ajjarkad Government Hospital.
