Murder of Japanese national in Cheonan

Overview

On October 28, a Japanese woman in her 20s was killed at an officetel in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. The victim reportedly died from hemorrhagic shock caused by multiple stab wounds.

A South Korean man in his 30s was arrested in Jeonju approximately nine hours after the incident. The suspect, identified as A, allegedly claimed he intended to commit suicide due to a 5 million won loss in stock investments and sought to die with the victim because he was afraid to die alone.

Police are investigating the relationship between the two acquaintances, who had reportedly met three times but were not in a romantic relationship. While social media speculation suggests they may have met through a language exchange app, authorities have not confirmed this. Investigators are currently conducting digital forensics on the victim’s mobile phone to clarify the circumstances of the attack. No evidence of sexual assault has been found thus far.
