Murder of Slavi Binev in Sofia
Overview
Slavcho (Slavi) Penchev Binev, a prominent Bulgarian businessman, former Member of the European Parliament, and former sports official, was shot dead in his Sofia home on October 24. Following the incident, police detained three men, including two Turkish citizens and one Bulgarian national.
Prosecutors charged Eyup Temiz, a Turkish national, with intentional murder, alleging he shot Binev in the face. Investigators initially explored motives involving unsettled financial relations or property disputes related to construction investments.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev later clarified that the investigation does not suggest a typical contract killing or a premeditated ambush by strangers. He noted that the perpetrator was a known associate of the victim. While three individuals were initially detained, two have since been released to serve as witnesses for the prosecution. The Minister also dismissed speculations regarding political motives behind the killing.
