Music industry debate over AI integration

Prominent music industry figures have expressed conflicting views regarding the integration of artificial intelligence in music production.

Thomas Bangalter, a former member of Daft Punk, stated at Art Basel that he is “not really interested in the creative usage of artificial intelligence.” He emphasized a preference for analogue equipment, arguing that music making is most compelling on an emotional rather than intellectual level. His perspective aligns with other veteran electronic artists who suggest AI could diminish the role of musicians.

In contrast, hip hop producer Dr. Dre defended AI as a creative tool. In an interview with the New York Times, he suggested that those who view the technology as a threat are likely “those who struggle to create.” Comparing current skepticism to historical resistance against drum machines and synthesizers, Dre noted that he uses AI experimentally to explore new creative directions and observed that many producers already incorporate AI into their workflows.
