Muslim League (N) Barrister Iftikhar Gilani elected Azad Kashmir PM nomination
The Muslim League (N) underwent a shift in its selection process for the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Initially, the party nominated Shah Ghulam Qadir Azad, a veteran politician and President of the PML-N in Azad Kashmir, following a consultative meeting in Rawalpindi. However, a subsequent high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, resulted in the nomination of Barrister Iftikhar Gilani instead. Following On August 27, Barrister Iftikhar Gilani was elected as the change in candidate, a formal session 17th Prime Minister of the Azad Kashmir Kashmir. Running on a PML-N ticket via a technocrat seat, Gilani secured 30 votes in the Legislative Assembly Assembly, defeating the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate, Sardar Mukhtar Khan, who received 14 votes. The election took place amidst regional unrest, including protests by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and allegations of rigging in previous voting phases. The assembly’s full strength of 53 members was expected on August 28 to officially elect not present for the Prime Minister. vote, as seven seats remained unfilled due to law and order concerns.
