Barrister Iftikhar Gilani elected Azad Kashmir PM

Overview

The Muslim League (N) underwent a shift in its selection process for the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Initially, the party nominated Shah Ghulam Qadir Azad, a veteran politician and President of the PML-N in Azad Kashmir, following a consultative meeting in Rawalpindi. However, a subsequent high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, resulted in the nomination of Barrister Iftikhar Gilani instead.

On August 27, Barrister Iftikhar Gilani was elected as the 17th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir. Running on a PML-N ticket via a technocrat seat, Gilani secured 30 votes in the Legislative Assembly, defeating the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate, Sardar Mukhtar Khan, who received 14 votes.

The election took place amidst regional unrest, including protests by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and allegations of rigging in previous voting phases. The assembly’s full strength of 53 members was not present for the vote, as seven seats remained unfilled due to law and order concerns.
