The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and the Bavarian State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) have initiated the public voting period for the 2027 Bird of the Year. This annual tradition allows citizens in Germany to vote online for one of five pre-selected species to raise awareness regarding local biodiversity and habitat preservation. As of late September, the voting process has reached its midpoint with approximately 105,000 votes cast. Current data indicates the Common Swift is leading the election, while the Crane is in last place. The candidates include the common raven, crane, common swift, European pied flycatcher, and white-throated dipper. On September 30, NABU and LBV launched the ‘Bird-O-Mat’, an interactive online tool designed to assist voters in selecting their preferred species. The tool utilizes seven targeted questions regarding appearance and ecological roles to help users make a decision. By this time, participation in the public vote had increased to more than 110,000 people. Each species represents specific ecological themes: the crane symbolizes wetland preservation, the dipper is linked to clean flowing waters, the raven represents the return of a previously persecuted species, and the pied flycatcher highlights the need for suitable nesting sites. Voting remains open until October 15, with the winner to be announced later that day.
