Overview
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) in Pakistan has implemented several digital and hardware updates to its identity management systems.
Initially, NADRA introduced chipless national identity cards manufactured domestically. These polycarbonate cards utilize a secure QR code instead of an embedded microchip to reduce reliance on imported technology. The cards are designed to be scanned via the PakID mobile app, allowing for authentication by banks, hospitals, and law enforcement. To complement this, NADRA launched self-service kiosks for biometric-based renewals and document replacements.
Following these updates, NADRA issued advisories regarding the registration process for Child Registration Certificates (B-Forms) and first-time Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC). The authority clarified that while parents can use the PakID app to apply for documents digitally, children must visit a registration center in person if their biometric data—including photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans—is not already recorded in the system.
