Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja administration controversies
Overview
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has faced several administrative and legal challenges. In late October 2026, former Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria accused the Governor of administrative intimidation and interference with procurement processes following his dismissal. Mosiria alleged his removal was retaliatory after he refused to facilitate direct procurement arrangements for individuals close to the Governor and claimed his budget was reduced by approximately 91.7 per cent.
Concurrently, Sakaja has been involved in disputes regarding a building collapse in Eastleigh. The Governor’s legal team issued an ultimatum to MP Babu Owino to remove social media posts regarding disputed development approvals. The dispute centers on an 18-storey building on 9th Street; Sakaja maintains the construction was unauthorized and characterized circulating documents as fake, despite a change of use being granted in October 2024.
In contrast, Babu Owino has accused the Governor of incompetence and alleged that a ‘KSh120 million bribe’ was involved, claiming to possess documentation showing approval was granted in February 2024. Owino has refused to apologize and challenged Sakaja to settle the matter in court. The National Construction Authority noted the project was registered in July 2025, while the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe whether county officials, builders, or professionals contributed to the disaster.
