National Australia Bank financial performance

Overview

National Australia Bank (NAB) reported third-quarter profits for 2026, showing growth compared to the previous year. Initial reports indicated a cash profit of $1.83 billion, a 4% increase, driven by lower bad debt charges. Subsequent reporting confirmed a statutory net profit of A$1.8 billion, a 9% increase, which the bank attributed to strong loan volumes and well-managed margins.

Financial metrics showed a 6% year-on-year increase in total gross loans and acceptances, reaching A$817.4 billion. Home lending grew by 4% to A$451.4 billion, while business lending rose by 2% to A$352.4 billion. Deposit balances also increased by 7% to A$685.4 billion. Despite these gains, the bank noted a slight decline in net interest margin, which fell by 2 basis points to 1.79%. Rising expenses were linked to technology costs, payroll remediation, and software capitalisation policies.

Regarding the broader market, NAB issued a cautious outlook for the housing sector, citing geopolitical uncertainty, federal tax changes, and high interest rates. The bank projected housing credit growth of only 2.5% for FY27, anticipating a 1.4% contraction in investor lending. This slowdown is reflected across the industry; major lenders reported double-digit declines in mortgage applications, with Westpac seeing a 20% fall and Commonwealth Bank a 15% drop. Equifax data noted overall mortgage demand fell 16.4% in the year to July.

Looking ahead, consensus estimates project fully franked dividends of $1.70 per share in FY26 and $1.72 in FY27, with earnings per share expected to grow from $2.38 to $2.54.
