National Open University of Nigeria institutional crises

Overview

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is facing significant institutional challenges regarding its law graduates and its alumni association.

Over 5,000 law graduates have petitioned the Nigerian House of Representatives after being unable to enter the Nigerian Law School for vocational training. While the university previously suspended its LLB programme in 2015 following rejections from the Council of Legal Education (CLE), graduates argue that many were admitted before the suspension. The House Committee on Public Petitions has summoned representatives from both NOUN and the CLE to address the impasse.

In a separate development, NOUN has suspended all activities of its Alumni Association, including upcoming elections, following allegations of certificate forgery, racketeering, and other irregularities involving the national president and the executive committee. The university management is constituting an investigative committee to probe these claims.
