National Palace Museum Dragon Sutra exhibition

Overview

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan is hosting a special exhibition of the Tibetan Dragon Canon, a 108-volume set of Buddhist scriptures commissioned by Emperor Kangxi during the Qing Dynasty. The collection is characterized by its craftsmanship, featuring gold ink calligraphy on indigo-dyed paper and lacquer covers decorated with gemstones.

Following a highly attended first phase that exceeded visitor expectations and caused significant queues, the museum launched a second phase of the exhibition on 8 August. To manage crowds and protect the national treasure, the museum implemented a trial reservation scheme, extended daily opening hours, and introduced discounts for late afternoon visitors.

The exhibition highlights the historical significance of the manuscripts, which were produced with the assistance of 171 lamas. Plans are in place to move the full collection to a dedicated transparent display chamber once the museum’s new building is completed in 2028.
