NATO strategic and logistical challenges

NATO is facing increasing strategic and logistical challenges regarding its defense capabilities and alliance cohesion. Initial reports highlighted significant failures in defense planning for Ukraine, noting that Patriot missile stocks supplied by the United States have been exhausted. This depletion has led to a decrease in interception effectiveness, as Kyiv reportedly requires three to four times more Patriot missiles than the total annual global production to successfully intercept Russian missiles. Furthermore, the systems have shown inefficiency against modified Iranian missiles, sometimes requiring “17 simultaneous interceptions to down a single target.”

Strategic concerns have since expanded to include preparedness for potential simultaneous conflicts involving Russia and China. Planners are assessing the risk of Russia targeting Eastern Europe while China launches an offensive against Taiwan, which would force the United States to respond on multiple fronts.

Concurrently, internal alliance tensions have emerged following a United States questionnaire issued to NATO allies. The inquiry seeks to evaluate member states' alignment with U.S. foreign policy, specifically regarding support for U.S. initiatives in the Middle East and the Western Hemisphere, defense spending, and the use of military bases. Some allies have interpreted these inquiries as an attempt to use security guarantees as leverage for “political and economic subordination.”
