Natural disasters in Nepal and France

Severe natural disasters have impacted Nepal, Tibet, and France. In the Himalayan region near the Nepal-China border, flash floods in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, alongside mudslides, have resulted in at least 538 deaths. Rescue operations for over 1,500 missing persons have faced challenges due to destroyed infrastructure and the threat of a newly formed landslide dam containing 2.5 million cubic meters of water.

In France, extreme weather has caused localized destruction. In Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, a mudslide during a canyoning outing caused at least two deaths. Additionally, a violent tornado in Pomas impacted approximately 300 homes and injured 48 people.

Scientific investigations are ongoing regarding the causes of these events. In the Himalayas, the flooding was linked to a glacier collapse at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters, triggering an avalanche of ice, rock, and sediment. Experts are studying the potential role of climate change and warming in increasing storm intensity and glacier instability.
