Nature connection and greening initiatives in Europe

Efforts to foster nature connection and environmental resilience continue through community and research-based initiatives in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the Netherlands, focus remains on the psychological and ecological benefits of nature engagement. BuitenBasis recently organized a Parent & Child Expedition in the Meije, using double kayaks to observe wildlife such as kingfishers. Research in North Holland supports these efforts; a PWN survey of over 700 residents found that 79 percent hold an ecocentric view. This aligns with findings from the University of Derby suggesting that daily conscious engagement with nature can increase happiness and health while fostering environmental responsibility.

Community programs are also targeting climate resilience through urban greening. In Zeewolde, the ‘Groene Straat Make-Over’—a collaboration between IVN Natuureducatie and the local municipality—offers residents plants and tools to replace tiles with greenery to improve biodiversity and manage rainwater. Similarly, Belgium’s ‘Behaag uw tuin’ campaign, organized by Regionaal Landschap Schelde-Durme, provides affordable native plants to help residents create shade and improve water absorption.

Additional nature-focused activities are scheduled to promote well-being and education. In Zottegem, Belgium, a guided walk on the Veerkrachtpad in Park van Breivelde is set for September 21 to focus on personal resilience. In Amsterdam, the De Ceuvel site will host a mini-safari on October 18, led by Yola Galinsky, to teach families about edible wild plants and winter survival in the natural world.
