Nauru establishment of embassy in Jerusalem

Nauru has officially opened its first embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the ninth country to establish a diplomatic mission in the city. Vice President and Foreign Minister Lionel Aingimea inaugurated the embassy, describing the move as a “major political decision” intended to signal the nation’s global stance and strengthen ties with Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar attended the ceremony and characterized Nauru as a “reliable and consistent diplomatic ally.” In response to the opening, Israel announced it will provide assistance to Nauru through the MASHAV international development program, including medical equipment such as cardiac ultrasound machines and water-purification systems.

This development makes Nauru the third Pacific Island nation to establish a diplomatic presence in Jerusalem, joining Papua New Guinea and Fiji, with Samoa expected to follow later this year.

Analysts suggest these diplomatic shifts are driven by a combination of strategic interests and religious convictions. With approximately 90 percent of indigenous Pacific Islanders identifying as Christian, many view support for Israel through the lens of Biblical prophecy and the recognition of Jewish people as “God’s chosen people.” This religious influence often intersects with political statecraft as small island nations seek economic cooperation and technical assistance in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and health.
