NBA roster adjustments and Devin Carter free agency

The Atlanta Hawks waived point guard Devin Carter as part of a roster restructuring effort to reduce guaranteed contracts ahead of the 2026-27 season. Carter, a former 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft known for his defensive energy, was recently acquired by Atlanta in a trade involving a 2033 second-round pick.

Carter, who previously played for the Sacramento Kings and attended Providence College, has faced challenges in his first two NBA seasons due to various injuries. Despite these setbacks, he showed flashes of potential, including a strong performance late in his sophomore season where he averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds over 12 games.

Following his release, the Boston Celtics expressed interest in signing Carter to bolster their backcourt. Analysts suggest Carter could serve as a “low-cost, defensive-minded guard” for Boston, potentially providing depth behind players like Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. If signed, he could join the Celtics on a standard minimum contract or a two-way deal. The Celtics are currently managing various roster adjustments, including evaluating potential two-way contract candidates and considering a significant extension for Payton Pritchard. The team is also preparing to introduce new additions Paul George, Mitchell Robinson, and Mike Conley.
