NBL Blitz basketball tournament in Bendigo

The CODE Sports NBL Blitz tournament commenced at Bendigo’s Red Energy Arena with the South East Melbourne Phoenix defeating the Sydney Kings 101-84. The Phoenix victory was driven by a 35-point second quarter and contributions from new imports Skylar Mays, D’Shawn Schwartz, and Yannis Morin.

Following the opening night, the tournament schedule progressed to include matchups such as the Perth Wildcats against Melbourne United, and the Adelaide 36ers against the Cairns Taipans. Rosters for these upcoming games have been impacted by various injuries and absences, including players such as Jesse Wagstaff for the Wildcats and Joe Ingles for Melbourne United.

As the tournament approaches its final stages, the Loggins-Bruton Cup title remains undecided. The South East Melbourne Phoenix currently lead the standings with 11 points. Melbourne United and the Illawarra Hawks remain in contention for the championship; Melbourne holds 6 points, while Illawarra has 4.

For Melbourne United to secure the title, they must defeat Illawarra and win at least three quarters to overtake the Phoenix. Conversely, Illawarra’s clearest path to victory involves defeating Melbourne while winning all four quarters. The tournament continues to feature matchups such as the New Zealand Breakers against the Sydney Kings. Melbourne United has been noted for having one of the deepest rosters in the league under rookie head coach Jacob Chance.
