Nchiraa Yam Festival shooting incident
Overview
On October 3, 2026, gunfire erupted during a chieftaincy escort procession at the conclusion of the annual Yam festival in Nchiraa, located in Ghana’s Bono Region. The violence resulted in two deaths and left approximately 13 to 14 people injured, including an on-duty police officer. Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah of the Bono Regional Police Command confirmed that investigations were launched to determine the motive and identify the perpetrators.
Following the incident, the Akwamu Royal Family appealed to the President and the Inspector-General of Police for intervention after the death of a six-year-old boy, Agyei Agyapong Gethro, was linked to the gunfire. After the child’s burial on October 23, royal family leadership called for a thorough and impartial investigation. Community leaders expressed concern regarding a recurring pattern of firearm discharge during the festival, and local officials urged residents to avoid bringing weapons to public gatherings.
