Overview
An assassination attempt in Cassano allo Ionio, Calabria, targeted 64-year-old Damiano Pepe, a figure linked to organized crime. Following the violence, Italian anti-mafia prosecutors executed 41 precautionary measures in a crackdown led by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate in Catanzaro. The operation, involving the Carabinieri ROS and the Cosenza Provincial Command, resulted in 24 arrests and 17 house arrests. The investigation targets several groups, including the Cassano, Sibari, and Corigliano Rossano clans, with charges including mafia association, murder, extortion, robbery, theft, illegal possession of firearms, and aiding illegal immigration. The probe also touches upon two specific homicides from 2001 and 2023.
In addition to criminal charges, investigators are probing a suspected political-mafia electoral pact. Authorities are looking into allegations that local administration roles or municipal jobs were discussed in exchange for electoral support. Among those placed under house arrest are the mayor of Corigliano-Rossano, Flavio Stasi, and minority councilor Pietro Lucisano. Specifically, an individual in custody, Annibale Matalone, allegedly sought employment at a local cemetery in exchange for electoral support.
In a related action titled Operazione Nexus, authorities seized approximately 4 million euros in assets from an individual suspected of being affiliated with the Mancuso clan. The seized property includes four buildings, over 18,000 square meters of agricultural land, a floriculture company in San Calogero, and various financial accounts.
