NEP 2020 implementation in Northeast India

Overview

The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Northeast India is facing both localized operational crises and regional calls for systemic support.

In Meghalaya, the Meghalaya College Teachers Association (MCTA) has reported a crisis regarding the fourth year of the undergraduate programme. The association cited significant staff shortages, noting a deficit of 488 posts across various colleges, which has reportedly forced some institutions to stop offering the fourth year despite student admissions. The MCTA also raised concerns regarding pay scales, alleging that the government has failed to honor commitments regarding the University Grants Commission (UGC) scale for eligible teachers.

On a regional level, representatives from seven Northeastern states met at the Northeast Education Conclave 2026 in Nagaland to propose a ‘Prime Minister’s Special Financial Package’ to support NEP 2020 implementation. The states recommended establishing a North East Knowledge System to promote indigenous heritage and creating a dedicated forum of education ministers to improve coordination with the central government. Other regional priorities include teacher capacity development, multilingual education, and the creation of shared research infrastructure and digital platforms to foster academic collaboration.
