Nepal flood and glacier collapse disaster

Overview

Following devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal, the government initially declined international assistance but later reversed its decision. The disaster, linked to a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border, has caused significant loss of life and left thousands of people missing.

Initial relief efforts included specialized technical expertise from India, China, Australia, and South Korea to assist with forensic identification and tunnel rescues. India also dispatched 47.5 tons of essential goods and deployed National Disaster Response Force teams. Vietnam subsequently pledged $300,000 in emergency humanitarian aid.

In response to the scale of the catastrophe, Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has urged the international community to treat such assistance as “climate reparations” rather than standard humanitarian aid, noting that Nepal’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions belies its disproportionate suffering from melting Himalayan glaciers.
