Overview

Nepal’s Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Gauri Kumari Yadav, resigned following a severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage and controversial comments regarding gas suppliers. During a parliamentary committee meeting, Yadav suggested the government revoke the licenses of all 58 private LPG companies, arguing that only two companies were necessary to meet demand. She accused entrepreneurs of creating “artificial shortages” and noted that only about 20,000 of the 48,000 cylinders sent to the Kathmandu Valley actually reached the market. The shortage led to significant consumer hardship, with reported prices reaching Rs 3,000 per cylinder against an official price of Rs 2,060.

Following the resignation, Prime Minister Balendra Shah appointed Deepak Kumar Sah as the new Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies. Sah, a lawmaker from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is a mechanical engineer and energy expert with over 23 years of experience in the hydropower sector.
